30 Years Of The Ex!

This year (2009) is the 30th anniversary of The Ex. After having played 1371 concerts all over the planet, The Ex, sometimes described as 'experimental trance-dance avant-afro-punk improv music', appears again with a change of lineup and a completely new program for the coming tour in march.

The Ex - Winter 2009

G.W. Sok decides to stop.

After 29 years G.W. Sok has decided to call it a day and not sing or tour with us anymore. After a long period of doubt and lengthy discussions he came to the conclusion that he had no longer enough enthusiasm for the complete Ex-undertaking. He wants to spend more time on writing and graphic design. He will continue to participate in Ex activities, one way or another.

Arnold de Boer of Zea new Ex band member.

For the coming tour in march we have invited Zea frontman Arnold de Boer to join us. One of our favourite musicians for many years now. We have worked together on The Ex 25-year Anniversary party 'The Convoy Tour'. Andy and Terrie also played with him last year may in Ethiopia and it worked a treat!. Arnold will play samples, beats, guitar, vocals and anything he can get his hands on. Terrie and Andy will continue to explore their baritone guitars which appeared in the last set and Katherina will find some more inventive rhythms and hopefully sing some more beautiful tunes.

  • Chalachew Ashenafi - masinqo / vocals
  • Mesele Asmamaw - krar
  • Asnake Gebreyes - kebero

Singer and masinqo (one-string fiddle) player Chalachew Ashenafi was born 41 years ago in Debre Tabor, close to the city of Gondar in Ethiopia where most of the famous Azmaris originate from. He has played in Europe before, for the Ethiopian communities in Italy and Germany, but this will be his first time playing in front of a European audience. With the The Ililta Band, in traditional line-up, he joins forces with krar player Mesele Asmamaw and kebero (traditional drum) player Asnake Gebreyes. Both are well-known musicians from the Mohammed Jimmy Mohammed trio, who made a big impact in Europe until the untimely death of Jimmy in December 2006.

Getatchew + The Ex - tour in May.

One of the highlights in our history was the concert at the Lincoln Center in New York, in August last year. 5000 people came and we had incredible feedback - reviews in the New York Times and Downbeat - iisted in the top concerts of the year by All-that-Jazz magazine etc. Getatchew is coming back to tour with us this May in Italy and Spain.
